What is rotary and what does it stand for?

Rotary International is a global network of more than 1.2 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem‑solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities.

Founded in 1905 by Paul Harris and three business‑profession friends in Chicago, the

organisation began with fellowship and mutual support and

soon evolved into a major humanitarian service club.

At its core, Rotary believes in three key pillars: service — helping others and programmes that improve lives; integrity — applying high ethical standards across professions and personal life; and international understanding, goodwill and peace — building bridges across cultures and geographies.

Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self”, captures the spirit of putting the needs of community, others and sustainable change ahead of personal gain.

For you and your local club in Ethiopia, this means being part of something both deeply local and truly global: you will meet regularly with professionals and community leaders, identify real‑life needs in your area, plan and carry out service projects, and simultaneously connect with the global Rotary family, drawing on ideas, resources and partnerships around the world.

Being part of Rotary means more than attending meetings; it means committing your skills, your voice, your time and your energy to a larger purpose — to build a world where communities thrive, individuals are empowered, and goodwill spreads beyond borders.
