Rotary International President Comes to Ethiopia

Updated: Feb 25

Strengthening Partnerships in Health, Peace, and Community Service

Earlier this year, Ethiopia had the honour of welcoming Francesco Arezzo, the President of Rotary International, during an important visit that highlighted the deep partnership between Rotary and the Ethiopian government and community. President Arezzo, who leads Rotary International for the 2025–26 term, was welcomed by His Excellency President Taye Atske Selassie at the National Palace in Addis Ababa. Their discussions focused on shared priorities such as health initiatives, education, peacebuilding, and community development, showing how Rotary’s global mission connects with local needs in Ethiopia.

One of the most meaningful parts of the visit was the focus on polio eradication, a long-standing goal of Rotary International. During their talks, President Arezzo emphasized that finishing the eradication of polio remains a top priority for Rotary, connecting this work to broader goals like peace and community strengthening. Both leaders praised Ethiopia’s strong performance in health campaigns and the successful prevention of outbreaks, reflecting years of partnership between Rotary clubs and local health authorities.

The visit also included engagement with Rotary members and community leaders across the country. Rotary clubs in cities such as Addis Ababa, Gondar, Jimma, and Awassa have carried out numerous service projects, from clean water and health programmes to peace and development initiatives. The presence of the Rotary International President brought global attention to these efforts and boosted morale among local Rotarians who have dedicated years of service to their communities.

For many members of the Rotary family in Ethiopia, this visit was more than a diplomatic occasion — it was a moment to celebrate 70 years of Rotary’s impact in the country and to look toward an even stronger future of collaboration. Through high-level meetings, shared reflections, and recognition of joint achievements, the visit reinforced Rotary’s commitment to service above self and showed how global leadership and local action can come together to create lasting change.
